LUFS (Loudness Units relative to Full Scale) is the standard for measuring perceived loudness in audio. Here's what you need to know.
The average loudness of your entire track. This is what streaming platforms use to normalize playback. Target -14 LUFS for Spotify and YouTube.
The maximum level between samples. Keep this below -1 dBTP to prevent clipping during encoding. Streaming services may reject tracks with peaks above 0 dBTP.
The difference between quiet and loud sections. A range of 5-10 LU is typical for pop/hip-hop. Classical music may have 15+ LU for more dynamic impact.
Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube all normalize playback to a target loudness. If your track is louder than the target, it will be turned down. This means over-compressed, crushed masters don't sound louder - they just sound worse.
Mastering to -14 LUFS allows you to keep more dynamics in your music. This means punchier drums, more impactful drops, and a more enjoyable listening experience. The loudness war is over - dynamics win.
